SELF-CENTREDNESS COMPARED

TO GOD-CENTREDNESS

Self-centredness or selfishness is the underlying cause of transgressions, disobedience, lawlessness, sinfulness, rebellion and pride. There are dozens of individual sins, but they all have their beginning in putting ourself first, or selfishness.

RESULTS OF SELF – CENTREDNESS

1.     Wanting things for ourself such as possessions, money, material goods and lustful desires.

2.     Wanting our own way which means rebellion and disobedience against God, parents, husbands,

elders, ministry, government, bosses and all authority.

3.     Wanting to put ourself first, that includes pride, and wanting attention, praise, and recognition of

ourself before and above others. It means putting ourself before God, and we make ourself an

idol, and worship and serve ourself rather than God.

RESULTS OF GOD – CENTREDNESS

Self-denial is necessary in order to become centred on God, and this is the foundation of confession and true repentance. Turning from ourself means turning from all sin, disobedience and rebellion. We must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and be crucified with Christ. The old person must be crucified and buried, so we can be resurrected as a new person in the image of Christ. (Romans 6) The old person is centred on self, and on serving and pleasing ourself which results in death. The new person is centred on God, and on serving and pleasing God which results in eternal life.

LEVELS OF GUILT, ANGER AND FEAR CAUSED BY SERVING OURSELF

The results of all the sins we commit show up in 3 measurable problem areas in our life: Guilt, Anger and Fear.

We measure the level of guilt in a person by looking at how much they blame and condemn other people, so they don’t feel as bad about their own guilt.

We measure the level of anger in a person by looking at how much they want to punish other people, by being angry and bitter towards them.

We measure the level of fear in a person by looking at how many broken relationships they have in their life, and how isolated and alone they are.

LEVELS OF FORGIVENESS, LOVE AND PEACE RESULTING FROM SERVING GOD

The result of confession and repentance from sin shows up in 3 measurable areas of blessing in our life: Forgiveness, Love and Peace.

We measure the level of forgiveness in a person by looking at how easy it is for them to forgive themselves and other people.

We measure the level of love in a person by looking at how easy it is for them to love people, by being patient, kind, generous, gentle, humble and pure. (1 Corinthians 13: 4-7)

We measure the level of peace in a person by looking at how easy it is for them to reconcile differences between people, and unite people, and be at peace with themselves and others.

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
